Does a few minutes change a birth chart?
By the Hourwyn team
A few minutes changes little in most birth charts and a lot in some. Four minutes moves the rising degree and the house borders by about one degree, and moves the planets almost not at all. It matters when the Ascendant or a planet sits close to a border, where a small shift puts it in the next sign or house.
How far each point moves
| Point | In 4 minutes | In 1 hour |
|---|---|---|
| Ascendant and house borders | About 1° | About 15°, half a sign on average |
| Midheaven | About 1° | About 15° |
| Moon | About 0.04° | About 0.5° |
| Sun | Under 0.01° | About 0.04° |
| Mercury to Pluto | Too small to matter | Under 0.1° |
The pattern is simple. The rising sign and the houses come from Earth's rotation, which is fast. The planets' signs come from their orbits, which are slow.
When a few minutes matters
- The Ascendant is near the border of two signs. At 29.6° of Gemini, two minutes later it is in Cancer.
- A planet sits on a house border. A planet within one degree of a border can move to the next house with a four-minute change.
- The Moon is about to change sign. It moves half a degree an hour, so this needs an error of an hour or more unless the Moon is right on the border.
When an hour matters
An hour moves the houses by about half a sign. The rising sign often changes, and in most charts several planets change house. An hour is also the size of the most common mistake: a daylight saving change handled wrongly, or a time zone picked by hand.
The twin test
Twins born ten minutes apart have the same planets in the same signs, and Ascendants about two and a half degrees apart. Their charts are nearly identical. This is one of the standard objections to astrology, and one of the reasons we describe a chart as themes to reflect on and not as a forecast.
Common questions
Does 2 minutes make a difference in a birth chart?
Usually not. Two minutes moves the Ascendant and the house borders by about half a degree. It changes a sign or a house only when something sits right on a border.
Why is the time of birth important in astrology?
It sets the rising sign and the twelve houses, which astrologers use to say where in life each planet's themes show up. Without a time those parts are missing.
Should I adjust my birth time for daylight saving?
No. Enter the clock time as it was at the birthplace. The conversion to universal time, daylight saving included, is done for you from the time zone history of that place.
What if my birth time is rounded to the hour?
Use it and mark it as approximate. The planets' signs are unaffected. The rising sign is probably right unless it falls near a border, and house positions should be read with some caution.
