No birth time? What a birth chart can and cannot show
By the Hourwyn team
Yes, you can get a birth chart without a birth time, but part of it will be missing. The signs of the Sun and the planets and most aspects between them can still be calculated. The rising sign and the twelve houses cannot, and on some days the Moon's sign is uncertain.
What you keep and what you lose
| Part of the chart | Without a birth time | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Sun sign | Known, unless you were born on a day the Sun changed sign | The Sun moves about 1° a day |
| Moon sign | Known on most days, uncertain if the Moon changed sign that day | The Moon moves 12° to 15° a day |
| Signs of Mercury to Pluto | Known, with rare exceptions on changeover days | They move slowly |
| Rising sign (Ascendant) | Not known | It changes about every two hours |
| The twelve houses | Not known | They are counted from the rising degree |
| Aspects between planets | Known | The planets barely move in a day |
| Aspects to the Moon | Approximate | The Moon can be several degrees either side |
What a noon chart is
When the time is unknown, the usual method is to calculate the sky for 12:00 noon at the birthplace. Noon is the middle of the day, so no planet can be more than half a day's travel from where the chart puts it. For the Moon that is about 6.5 degrees either way. For every other planet it is under one degree.
A noon chart drawn by software will still show a rising sign and houses, because the software has to put something there. They belong to noon, not to you, and should be ignored or left off.
When the Moon's sign is uncertain
The Moon spends a little over two days in each sign. On most birth dates it stays in one sign from midnight to midnight, and the Moon sign is certain without a time. On a day when it crosses from one sign to the next, the chart can only say it was one of the two.
Try to find the time first
A birth time is often easier to find than people think. In the United States it is usually on the full copy of the birth certificate, even when the short copy leaves it off. The steps are in how to find your birth time. An approximate time, such as "around breakfast", is worth using too: see how exact a birth time needs to be.
What about rectification?
Some astrologers offer rectification: working backward from life events to estimate a birth time. The result is an estimate built on interpretation, not a record. We do not offer it.
Common questions
Can I use 12:00 noon if I do not know my birth time?
Yes, that is what a noon chart does. Treat it as a chart without houses: the rising sign and house positions it shows are those of noon, not yours.
How accurate is a birth chart without a time?
The planet positions are as exact as in any chart, except the Moon, which can be up to about 6.5 degrees off. What is missing is the rising sign and the houses, the parts that depend on the hour.
Can my rising sign be worked out from my looks or personality?
Astrologers who do this are guessing from interpretation. There is no calculation that recovers a rising sign without a time of birth.
I am adopted and cannot get my birth time. What then?
Use a chart without houses. It still holds the signs of all ten planets and the aspects between them, and it is honest about what cannot be known.
