Can ChatGPT read your birth chart?
By the Hourwyn team
An AI chatbot such as ChatGPT can explain what the placements in a birth chart mean, but it does not reliably calculate where the planets were. Unless it runs real astronomy code, or you paste in a chart that was already calculated, it may give you a wrong Moon, rising sign or houses and sound sure about it. Calculate the chart first, then ask the AI to interpret that data.
Two jobs that are easy to mix up
Making a birth chart is arithmetic: a time zone lookup, an ephemeris and some trigonometry. Interpreting one is writing. A language model is built for the second job. It produces likely text, and a likely-sounding planet position is not the same as a calculated one.
| Task | How a chatbot does | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Explaining a placement | Well | It has read a great deal of astrology writing |
| Your sun sign | Usually right | It follows from the date alone |
| Moon sign, rising sign, houses | Unreliable without a calculation tool | They need an ephemeris, the time zone history of the birthplace and exact arithmetic |
| Staying faithful to your chart | Can slip | It may mention a placement or an aspect your chart does not have |
| Giving the same answer twice | Not guaranteed | Its output varies from one run to the next |
Some chatbots can run code or call an outside tool, and then the result is only as good as that code. Ask it how it got the positions. If it cannot say, check them.
How to get a sound result from any AI
- Calculate the chart with a calculator first. Our free chart lists every planet with its sign, degree and house, and every aspect with its orb.
- Paste that table into the chat, instead of your birth date and time.
- Ask the AI to name the placement or aspect behind every statement it makes.
- Check each one against the table. Throw out anything that cites a placement you do not have.
Is it safe to give a chatbot your birth details?
A birth date, time and place are personal data, and together with a name they point to one person. Before pasting them in, look at the chatbot's data settings: whether conversations are stored and whether they are used to train future models. Do not enter another person's birth details without their permission.
How Hourwyn uses AI
We split the two jobs. The chart is calculated by astronomy software that returns the same answer every time. An AI language model then writes the report, and it is given only the calculated chart and our interpretation notes. Each chapter is checked automatically against the chart, and a chapter that cites something the chart does not contain is rejected and rewritten. In the finished report every paragraph shows the placement it rests on. The method is set out in how a birth chart is calculated.
So is AI astrology accurate?
The question has two parts. An AI report can be accurate to the chart: that can be checked, line by line. Whether astrology itself describes a person is a separate matter, and controlled tests have not supported it. See is astrology accurate.
Common questions
Can ChatGPT calculate my birth chart?
Not reliably by itself. A language model predicts text and does not look up an ephemeris unless it is connected to a tool that does. Check any positions it gives against a chart calculator.
Which AI is best for astrology?
We have not tested them side by side, and the answer changes with every new model. What matters more is giving the AI a chart that was already calculated and checking what it cites.
Can I trust an AI-written astrology report?
Trust it to the extent you can check it. Look for a report that names the placement behind each statement and says how the chart was calculated.
Is a report written by AI the same as a session with an astrologer?
No. A session is a live conversation with a person who can ask you questions. A written report is a document made from your chart data. Ours is the second kind.
